The Preparation

The preparation for this pool renovation was as hard as it gets.We completely removed a 50 year-old layer of marble sheen on a pool with a bowled deep end. We had to jackhammer footholds and work off ropes to complete some sections. The original shell was concreted in such a way that a cold joint existed through the middle of the pool and had developed a number of rust areas. A large section of steel and concrete was removed and replaced. To do this we used the latest civil construction techniques for bonding concrete.

The resurfacing of this pool was particularly challenging as the pool shape is far from regular. It has seven sides with curved corners and no two straights are the same length, nor corner the same angle. The interior has a regular flat shallow end that opens out to a wide irregular, bowled deep end. This pool is deeper than average and shaped for the diving board, also renovated as part of the project.

The Tiling

The client came to us based on our experience in pool tiling and this job was a true challenge and we have provided original, high standard solutions to what is one the most technical pool tiling jobs possible.
hbb-6The result is truly impressive. The coping and bond beam are of the highest standard and the craftsmanship is shown in the corners. The most obvious example is in the external corner at the stairs. Off cuts where used to curve the corner gradually and the infill was done in an Art Deco style to match the house and give a sense of history to the renovation. The black mosaics lining the pool have been laid in a regular grid on the walls and the shallow end, however they gradually separate from the grid and roll around the bowl of the deep end. This creates the appearance of a swirling vortex in the deep end. Essentially this project is a resurfacing exercise like most pool renovations. The scale, technical standard and the stunning result, particularly of the mosaic tiling of the pool interior, is what makes this job an award winner.
